China’s First 550-MW F-Class Gas Turbine Project Begins Full Operation

Updated: July 07, 2026

China’s first 550-megawatt F-class gas turbine project was fully operational on June 30. The project was built by China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., in Tongnan District of Chongqing Municipality.

With its two units, each with a capacity of 550.12 MW, in full operation, the project can generate 2.1 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, ensuring a stable supply of power for the Chengdu-Chongqing region this summer. It can also save 200,000 metric tons of standard coal and reduce 860,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, advancing the regional green transformation.

The project has a fast load shedding system, so it can speedily isolate itself from the main grid if there is a malfunction, and recover normal supply when the malfunction disappears. Each of its units is connected to two full-load transmission lines, so that even if one transmission line is out of order, full-load electricity can still be delivered to the grid via the other. With these capabilities, the project will help adjust the peak and frequency of the regional grid and enhance the grid’s emergency response and anti-disaster abilities, thereby ensuring the safe and stable operation of Chongqing’s grid.

The project is also equipped with a smart control system that enables one-button start and stop. Through this system, engineers can also conduct around-the-clock intelligent surveillance and monitor the devices’ performance through visualized data, so as to achieve efficient and secure operation of the project.
