China-Mongolia Cross-Border Railroad Hits Construction Milestone

Updated: June 24, 2026

The installation of all 94 T-shaped beams that support the Chinese section of the Ganqmod-Gashuun Sukhait Railway was completed on June 13, providing a solid foundation for subsequent deck and track construction.

The Chinese section of the project is invested and built by China Energy Investment Corporation Co., Ltd. (CHN Energy). The prestressed beams are either 24 meters or 32 meters, and the heaviest among them weighs up to 149.5 metric tons. Handling such tremendous weight requires advanced construction technology, safe management and precise operation.

Baoshen Railway Group, a CHN Energy subsidiary, and its collaborators worked out a meticulous construction plan and continued to optimize the beam transport, elevation and installation processes. They adopted an all-around quality guarantee method — simulate the whole process before installation, monitor the process during installation and carry out evaluation and review after the work. In this way, T-shaped beams were safely and precisely aligned with each other with high quality.

The Ganqmod-Gashuun Sukhait Railway is another important cross-border railway that connects China and Mongolia in addition to the Erenhot-Zamyn-Uud Railway that was built in 1956.

The new railway connects Ganqmod Port in North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region with the port of Gashuun Sukhait in Mongolia. Upon completion of construction in 2027, it will connect China’s Ganqmod-Wanshuiquan Railway with the Mongolian southward railroads.

Upon opening, it’s expected to facilitate the transport of 30 million tons of cargo annually, thus playing a crucial role in strengthening the interconnectivity between the two countries and advancing the bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
