On December 15, the Hainan 500-kV main grid project, a key project included in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) for power development and a major project of the Hainan Free Trade Port, was fully put into operation. This project, based on the overall situation of national energy security and the construction of a new power system, aims to build a safe, reliable, intelligent and efficient provincial core backbone grid, providing solid support for the large-scale development and consumption of clean energy and the development of the digital economy.

Built and commissioned in the form of a single closed loop encircling the entire island, the project forms a square-shaped main grid framework covering the entire Hainan. It substantially enhances the optimized resource allocation and risk resilience of Hainan’s power grid, ensures the secure transmission and high-proportion accommodation of clean energy such as nuclear, photovoltaic, and wind power, and strengthens the power supply guarantee for load centers across the island.

The project applied technologies such as digital twins on an overall basis, offering a demonstrative model for building a green, low-carbon, safe, and efficient modern energy system.
