China’s Baowu Launches Nickel-Based Welding Materials for High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors

Updated: April 26, 2024

Baowu Special Metallurgy Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Baowu Steel Group Corporation, recently held a launch ceremony for the world’s first commercially available nickel-based welding materials for high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactors.

It marks a significant breakthrough in and promotion of China's independent capabilities in the nuclear power sector.

Recognized internationally as an advanced nuclear energy system, high-temperature gas-cooled reactors offer significant advantages such as high safety, high thermal efficiency, and flexible fuel cycles. The steam generator, a key component in the main equipment of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear islands, is referred to as the "lung of nuclear power" within the industry.

Steam generator-related components require connection through weld seams, giving welding materials a crucial role. They are one of the few core materials during the construction period of 200,000-kilowatt demonstration projects that have not been domestically sourced.

The construction of the first commercial 600,000-kilowatt high-temperature gas-cooled reactor unit signifies China's leading position in nuclear power technology.

Baowu Special Metallurgy Co., Ltd. will continue to prioritize technological innovation, enhance the safety and economics of nuclear power materials, and promote the continuous development of nuclear power technology, making new and greater contributions to the prosperity and development of China's nuclear power industry.
