China officially named and delivered an independently developed new-generation deep-water multifunctional offshore engineering vessel, Haiyang Shiyou 292, in Qidong, a county-level city in Jiangsu Province, on August 21. The vessel is crucial equipment for further exploration and development of deep-sea energy resources.
The ship, which has a displacement exceeding 17,600 tons, has a deck area equal to nearly five standard basketball courts. It applies advanced systems such as an intelligent power station and bidirectional heat-exchange heating. These reduce fuel consumption by approximately 15 percent compared with traditional solutions and support a maximum cruising range of 15,000 nautical miles.
The vessel has 93 structural sections and more than 80 small cabins. To address enormous construction difficulties stemming from the compact and enclosed cabin layout and the adoption of multiple new technologies, the project team refined the management and control of the whole project. It completed the entire process of vessel design, construction and sea trials in less than two years, providing valuable experience for similar projects.

China National Offshore Oil Corporation, which owns the Haiyang Shiyou 292, has built a fleet for offshore oil and gas development, including deep-water multi-purpose vessels, heavy-lift vessels, pipe-laying vessels, trenching support vessels and large launching barges. It has steadily fostered strong international competitiveness with regard to its offshore equipment and engineering capabilities, which span all water depths and sea areas.
