Unit 2 of the Taipingling nuclear power project in Guangdong Province, a project of China General Nuclear Power Corporation, was officially put into operation on August 3.
This marks the full completion and operation of Phase I of the project, which is the first nuclear power project in the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area that adopts Hualong One, China’s third generation of nuclear power technology.

The project, located in Huidong County of Huizhou City, Guangdong, is planned to deploy six Hualong One nuclear power units. Its Phase‑I project received government approval on April 8, 2019. Construction of Unit 2 began on October 15, 2020.
Drawing fully on the experience accumulated from earlier Hualong One projects, the construction team accomplished a series of major engineering milestones, including main‑structure construction on the nuclear island, equipment installation and commissioning, nuclear fuel loading, the first criticality of the reactor and grid‑connected power generation. Steady progress has been made in the project’s construction quality, safety and efficiency.
The two units of Phase I are expected to generate over 18 billion kilowatt‑hours of electricity a year, meeting the annual production and livelihood needs of nearly 2 million people. They will reduce approximately 16.63 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, bolstering the clean‑energy supply capacity of the Greater Bay Area.
