Kazakhstan’s 3.45 megawatts/7.72 megawatt-hours energy storage project completed full-process commissioning for grid connection on August 1, marking the country’s first energy storage system ready for operation and opening a new chapter in its grid energy storage era.

The project, funded, designed and constructed by subsidiaries of State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), is located at the 220-kilovolt substation in Kokshetau, northern Kazakhstan, where winter temperatures can drop to as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius. To tackle the ultra-low temperature challenges, the SPIC subsidiaries collaborated to formulate a tailored plan for project construction, operation and maintenance.
The project has adopted the SPIC-developed POWERCABIN3 liquid-cooled energy storage system, which features three-level electrical protection, aerosol fire suppression and electro-hydraulic isolation. The system also employs intelligent liquid-cooled temperature control technology, which can keep the temperature difference between battery cells within 5 degrees Celsius and thus reduce auxiliary power consumption by 20 percent. The system has a design service life of no less than 15 years, complying with mainstream international certification standards including UL, IEC and NFPA.
Kazakhstan has seen steady growth in its installed capacity of renewable energy in recent years, with surging demand for energy storage facilities. The project will offer solid support for the large-scale transmission of renewable power to the grid, guarantee the safe and stable operation of the grid and improve Kazakhstan’s energy storage industrial standards.

To date, the total installed capacity of SPIC’s new energy projects in Kazakhstan, including those under construction, has exceeded 1.8 gigawatts, making the corporation the largest renewable energy investor in the country. This landmark progress not only consolidates SPIC’s leading role in the regional green energy transition, but also injects strong impetus into Kazakhstan’s development of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient modern grid system.
