A cross-river project designed to facilitate power transmission from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to Shanghai was launched in the city’s Chongming District on July 30.
The project extends from Shanghai’s Chongming Island to Taicang, a county-level city in Jiangsu Province, and runs under the main navigation channel of the Yangtze River. The project involves building a 12.2-kilometer cross-river tunnel as well as a 1.83-kilometer onshore tunnel. The cross-river tunnel will have a diameter of 14.6 meters and a maximum burial depth of approximately 95 meters underground.

The cross-river project, scheduled for completion and operation by the end of 2030, involves an investment of over 11.26 billion yuan ($1.67 billion). It will connect Chongming Island and the load centers in Shanghai, setting multiple world records with its power transmission capacity, tunnel diameter, burial depth and shield tunneling distance.
Upon completion, the cross-regional power transmission project will annually deliver over 40 billion kilowatt-hours of wind, solar and thermal power generated from the Kubuqi Desert energy base in Inner Mongolia to Shanghai, with green power accounting for more than 50 percent of the total supply. As a key initiative, it will support the development and outbound power transmission of large-scale clean energy bases in China’s desert, Gobi and wasteland areas, and underpins the strategic task of building Shanghai into an international economic, trade, financial, shipping and technological innovation hub.
