On July 24, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, named the first vessel of the second-generation 175,000-cubic-meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier series Sea Energy and delivered it to China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Merchants Group.

The vessel, independently developed and designed by DSIC, is equipped with dual-fuel main engines, power generators, conventional oil-fired boilers, a cargo handling system and a reliquefaction unit.
Building on the experience gained during the construction of the first-generation LNG carriers, the vessel has undergone technological iterations and process upgrades, such as optimized hull lines, propellers and energy-saving devices, attaining well-balanced performance in fuel efficiency, operational flexibility and compatibility. It is able to berth at most major LNG onshore terminals worldwide.
Faced with an intensive gas trial program involving multiple test items and complex operating conditions, the vessel’s trial program was designed to replicate actual operating conditions as closely as possible. It completed the LNG unloading demonstration at an onshore terminal in merely 10.5 hours.
From building its first LNG carrier to achieving steady deliveries, DSIC has remained committed to continuously refining production techniques and has formed a comprehensive shipbuilding system. The delivery of the Sea Energy vessel has been a compelling testament to DSIC’s strong capabilities in serial, mass and high-quality construction of LNG carriers.
