China’s Largest Single-Unit High-Altitude Mountain Wind Power Project Starts Full Operation

The expansion project of the Julongliang Wind Farm, an investment of China Datang Corporation Limited, went into full-capacity operation with its final turbine connected to the grid on July 19. The expansion project is China's largest high-altitude mountain wind power project in terms of single-turbine capacity.

The expansion project is located in Jinyuan Township of Kunming, the capital of Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, at an average altitude of 3,239 meters. It has a total installed capacity of 158.22 megawatts, with three 8.34-MW and 12 11.1-MW turbines.

Once fully operational, it will generate about 462 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity per year, sufficient to meet the annual power needs of 180,000 three-person households. It will save 140,000 metric tons of standard coal and cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 380,000 tons each year.

Capitalizing on the region's abundant wind energy resources, the project employs customized large-capacity turbines that can adapt well to harsh plateau conditions, such as the complex terrain, low temperatures and strong wind, and overcome the limitations of conventional equipment.

In this way, the project enhances the efficiency and stability of power generation through wind resources and enables intensive and efficient development of wind resources on high-altitude mountains, thereby setting a brand-new benchmark for all high-altitude wind power projects nationwide.
