[New Year, New Start] COSCO SHIPPING Unveils China’s First Calculation Tool for Ocean Container Transport Carbon Emission

Updated: March 31, 2026

Recently, a tool for calculating the carbon emissions of the global ocean container transport, independently developed by COSCO SHIPPING Technology Co., Ltd., was certified by Smart Freight Centre, an international non-profit organization focusing on reducing the impact of emissions from global freight transportation.

The tool adopts the full-process green certification technology services of China Standard Inspection Co., Ltd. (CSIC), a subsidiary of China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited (COSCO SHIPPING). As China’s first in this regard, it marks that the nation’s green and low-carbon technological achievements in the shipping and logistics sector have successfully aligned with international standards, thereby providing technical support for global freight emission reduction and the joint effort to build a sustainable ecosystem on Earth.

In strict compliance with relevant international standards, the tool is able to accurately calculate the carbon emissions of containerized cargo across different shipping routes. It can generate a Well-To-Wheels greenhouse gas emission report covering the entire lifecycle. Supported by the third-party verification from CSIC, the tool can issue enterprises a green certification for logistics and supply chains. This helps Chinese enterprises overcome international green trade barriers and meet the increasingly stringent global compliance requirements for carbon reduction. It effectively assists transport service providers in reducing international carbon-compliance costs and provides solid support for export enterprises to reduce costs, enhance efficiency, and achieve greener global expansion.

In the future, CSIC, will continue to strengthen its shipping carbon footprint research and improve its carbon emission factor database. It will promote the sustainable development of shipping and logistics through technological innovation. The company aims to build a smart, cross-regional carbon traceability and certification platform that covers the entire industry. This effort will fully support Chinese enterprises in navigating the global green transition steadily and going far.
