On January 20, China Energy Investment Corporation Co., Ltd. (CHN Energy) completed the full-load trail run of the second gas-powered unit at its Anji Power Plant in Zhejiang Province. The operation lasted for 168 consecutive hours, showing that the Anji Power Plant as China’s largest and most efficient gas-fired power units is now fully commissioned.
The power station has a total installed capacity of 1,686 megawatts, with two 843-megawatt gas-steam circled units fitted with globally advanced gas turbine technology. Upon operation, the power plant is expected to churn out 7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting the demands of about 6 million of residents. The whole project can save about 680,000 tons of standard coal and reduce approximately 1.86 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Anji Power Plant uses multiple advanced technologies to meet the high standards of the new electricity system. It takes one and a half hours from starting up to take the power unit to full operation, enabling major functions such as swift switch-on and -off as well as wide-range load adjustment. The H-class turbines can, therefore, operated in light of unstable wind and photovoltaic energies.
The power plant performs much better in the emission of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide and energy consumption than 1000-megawatt coal-fired plants. It is also supplemented with a national-level laboratory to explore alternative fuel sources, such as hydrogen. “Overcoming the technical barriers of hydrogen blending in H-class gas turbines is a crucial path toward low- and zero-carbon emission in the power industry,” said Shen Mingjun, Director of Anji Power Plant’s Engineering Department.
Smart operation is another feature of the plant. The automatic generation control system debugging allows one-click start-stop of units and unattended water island operations. Through the innovative cultivation of an integrated operation and maintenance model, the plant has built an intelligent system, strengthening energy security with smart equipment and management.
