On November 12, the world’s largest high-altitude wind energy kite took off for tests in Alxa Left Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. As a core component of the Chinese national high-altitude wind energy research and development project, the kite is developed by China Power Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited.
The tests involved deployment and recovery of a single 5,000-square-meter kite and dual 1,200-square-meter kites. The 5,000-square-meter canopy covers an area comparable to about a dozen standard basketball courts. It is designed to operate at altitudes ranging up to 5,000 meters, or even 10,000 meters. The successful deployment of the ultra-large power-generating kite has proved that such high-altitude wind power generation technology is able to achieve large capacity and high power output.
