Dual-Fuel Powered Ro-Ro Vessel Makes Maiden Voyage to Hong Kong

Updated: October 13, 2025

CM Hong Kong, the world’s first large roll-on/roll-off ship (Ro-Ro) powered by a methanol dual-fuel system, made its maiden voyage to Hong Kong recently.

This vessel was ordered by China Merchants Energy Shipping Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Merchants Group. Its power system enables flexible switching between fuel and methanol, meeting the Tier Ⅲ emission standards of the International Maritime Organization. It can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 70 percent when it uses clean methanol.

The vessel is 219.9 meters long and is equipped with 13 loading decks that have 9,300 standard vehicle slots. The total loading area is 78,416 square meters, approximately equivalent to 11 standard football fields. It is equipped with 156 closed-circuit television surveillance systems, and coupled infrared thermal imaging probes are installed on every deck to ensure safety.

Its first voyage will attract more clean energy suppliers to provide services in Hong Kong.
