Updated: July 24, 2025

On July 16, the naming and delivery ceremony for the “BYD ZHENGZHOU,” the second 7,000-unit LNG dual-fuel car carrier built by Guangzhou Shipyard International Company Limited (GSI) under China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC), was held in Nansha, Guangzhou.

The vessel spans 199.9 meters in length and 38 meters in width, boasting a design draft of 9 meters and a design speed of 18.5 knots. It features an LNG dual-fuel propulsion system and a permanent magnet shaft generator. Additionally, it incorporates various energy-saving technologies such as energy-efficient devices and anti-fouling drag-reduction coatings, making it a green, intelligent, environmentally friendly, and high-efficiency car carrier.

Two vessels of this type have been built by GSI. The first ship, the “BYD HEFEI,” was delivered and put into operation in early January. Both vessels are directly owned by BYD Group. With the “BYD ZHENGZHOU” now in service, China’s capacity for exporting domestically manufactured vehicles by sea will be further enhanced.

With the delivery of the “BYD ZHENGZHOU,” GSI has leveraged its technological advantages to secure nearly 40 car carrier orders. To date, GSI has delivered 17 LNG dual-fuel PCTCs with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles and one with 8,600 vehicles, amounting to 127,600 car spaces in total.

Currently, GSI has developed a specialized product matrix consisting of optimized ship types such as tankers, container ships, and ro-ro vessels, as well as special vessels like high-end ro-pax ships, semi-submersibles, and polar-class vessels. In car carrier construction, GSI has engaged in benchmarking and mutual improvement with its sister companies. By continuously promoting lean management and implementing multi-dimensional, full-process lean improvement initiatives, the company has significantly enhanced its production efficiency.
