China Unveils Revolutionary 220 kV Transformer

Updated: July 21, 2025

China’s first 220 kilovolt flexible spare transformer engineered by Shandong Electrical Engineering & Equipment Group Co., Ltd. under China Electrical Equipment Group Co., Ltd. — has aced all initial type tests.

This breakthrough marks a major technological advancement in the field and provides strong momentum for innovation in the power transmission and transformation equipment industry.

The core objective of this transformer is to enhance the general applicability and asset utilization of spare grid equipment. After rigorous tests, the transformer is compatible with 60 percent of the 220 kV three-phase integrated power transformers currently in operation in the China Southern Power Grid. Its application will also improve spare equipment utilization, optimize asset management, and reduce overall spare inventory costs.

Throughout the R&D process, the design team took a rigorous and practical approach, holding several meetings with partners to review and refine the technical plan. During production, the team worked closely across all stages — from design to testing — ensuring high efficiency and quality, which enabled the transformer to pass all type tests on the first try.

The transformer incorporates an innovative “dual-reactor” modular solution to cater to a wide range of impedance values. This pioneering approach allows for seamless adjustment of transformer impedance by internally reconfiguring impedance components, ensuring precise adaptation to diverse application requirements with ease.
