POWERCHINA’s Mega Power Generation Project Goes Live

Updated: July 11, 2025

The Guangdong Guoyue Shaoguan Comprehensive Utilization Power Generation Expansion Project, developed by Power Construction Corporation of China (POWERCHINA), has commenced commercial operations following a successful 168-hour full-load trial run.

This milestone marks the commercial debut of China’s inaugural demonstration project, featuring the world’s largest single-unit circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler.

The project adopts a domestically developed 700-megawatt ultra-supercritical CFB boiler, the largest of its kind globally. Designed to generate electricity from low-grade waste such as coal gangue, the system integrates four core technologies: ultra-low emissions at the furnace outlet, an external bed-free design, a series-coupled hydraulic system, and a water-cooled wall water-replenishment protection system. These innovations enable the efficient and clean use of inferior fuels with ultra-low emissions, delivering substantial environmental and social benefits.

During construction, the team worked amid the remote mountainous region of northern Guangdong, overcoming the complex challenges of building a pioneering power unit. Within just 18 months and 25 days, the project was transformed from blueprint to a benchmark project under Guangdong’s 14th Five-Year Plan for backbone power supply — setting a national record for the shortest construction period for similar units.

The project’s operation will significantly enhance power supply capacity and reliability in Shaoguan. It will also provide strong energy support for the Shaoguan data center cluster, a key part of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s national hub node.
