CNOOC Completes Largest-Ever LNG Bunkering Operation in Hong Kong

Updated: June 20, 2025

China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) recently completed Hong Kong’s largest single liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation to date. The operation took place at the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals, where the world’s largest LNG bunkering vessel, Haiyang Shiyou 301, supplied 4,300 tons of LNG to the German container ship Hanoi Express.

This landmark event significantly enhances Hong Kong’s marine fuel supply capacity and marks a breakthrough in the integration of green port initiatives with modern shipping systems, further strengthening Hong Kong’s role as an international shipping hub.

This was Hong Kong’s first-ever LNG bunkering operation conducted directly at a container terminal, as well as the first time bunkering was conducted concurrently with cargo loading and unloading. The Haiyang Shiyou 301, manufactured by CNOOC, is the largest LNG bunkering vessel in the world and China’s first of its kind. It has a storage capacity of 30,000 cubic meters and can supply up to 1,650 cubic meters of LNG per hour — ranking among the most capable globally.

For this operation, Haiyang Shiyou 301 loaded LNG at CNOOC’s Jinwan “Green Energy Port” and sailed through the Pearl River estuary to reach Hong Kong, completing a seamless end-to-end fuel supply chain across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In close coordination with the Hong Kong-based CLPe Group, CNOOC tailored a solution that combined bunkering with cargo operations. Thanks to intelligent monitoring systems and efficient planning, the vessel completed the 4,300-ton refueling task in just 8.5 hours — meeting the full voyage needs of Hanoi Express while reducing port turnaround time and cutting operational costs. The effort set new records in fuel quantity and bunkering efficiency for Hong Kong port.

CNOOC has been actively advancing the low-carbon transformation of maritime energy. With LNG bunkering licenses in seven key ports including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Ningbo, and by building a robust LNG bunkering fleet, the company is establishing itself as China’s first energy provider capable of coordinated multi-port fuel supply across the country.
