China-Peru Energy Ties Strengthened Through ‘Small Yet Beautiful’ PV Project

Updated: June 16, 2025

China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd. (CYPC), a subsidiary of China Three Gorges Corporation, received acclaim for its Arrow Photovoltaic Project in Peru. The project was honored as a leading example of clean energy initiatives in the “Small Yet Beautiful” category at the 3rd Belt and Road Energy Ministerial Conference.

Located in Peru’s Arequipa region, the project comprises two photovoltaic power stations, Majes and Reparticion, Peru’s first operational solar demonstration projects. Together, they provide 40 megawatts of installed capacity, delivering around 90 million kWh of clean electricity annually for local community.

To further boost efficiency, CYPC plans to expand capacity and introduce advanced Chinese energy storage solutions to address nighttime electricity demand. Technical upgrades also include exploring automated cleaning robots to replace manual sand removal in the desert environment.

Beyond technology, the project has fostered teamwork. Despite challenges posed by time zone differences, project teams maintained seamless collaboration. Cultural exchanges — ranging from football matches during the World Cup qualifiers to sharing Chinese cuisine — have helped build trust and deepen cross-cultural friendships.

As a representative “Small Yet Beautiful” project, Arrow exemplifies quick returns, high local impact, and environmental benefits. It reflects the shift from grand-scale projects to refined, people-centered cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
