China’s Milestone in Transportation and Energy Integration

Updated: April 30, 2025

The Tengzhou section of the groundbreaking Zaozhuang-Heze Expressway Transportation and Energy Integration Demonstration Project — the first transportation and energy integration project in China — officially achieved grid connection and commenced power generation.

Invested and constructed by China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd (Energy China), the project adopts a deep integration model of “transportation + energy”, utilizing idle land along highway slopes, interchange loops, and other areas to deploy distributed photovoltaic (PV) systems. These systems provide clean, renewable electricity for surrounding infrastructure and transport vehicles.

The Tengzhou section has an installed capacity of approximately 17.02 megawatts and is expected to generate around 19 million kilowatt-hours annually — equivalent to saving about 5,715.16 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 9,292.42 tons each year.

To date, the project has generated a cumulative 57.46 million kWh of electricity, supplying a robust source of green power for the local transportation sector. Upon completion, the project will serve as an important demonstration for promoting green transformation in key transportation and energy integration areas and exploring low-carbon development pathways for the transportation industry.
