CHD Breaks Ground on Two Ultra-Large Energy Storage Projects in Xinjiang

Updated: March 10, 2025

China Huadian Corporation LTD. (CHD) has simultaneously commenced construction on two ultra-large independent energy storage projects in Xinjiang — the Urumqi 1GW/4GWh Independent Energy Storage Project and the Kashgar 1GW/4GWh Independent Energy Storage Project.

The Urumqi 1GW/4GWh Independent Energy Storage Project, located in the northeastern part of the desert in Urumqi’s Midong District, involves a total investment of approximately 3 billion yuan ($0.41 billion). Once completed, it will store 1.14 billion kWh of electricity during off-peak periods and supply 1.04 billion kWh during peak demand, effectively reducing the curtailment rate of the photovoltaic (PV) power station in the Midong Desert by 3.46 percent annually.

The Kashgar 1GW/4GWh Independent Energy Storage Project, situated in the Kashgar region, has a total investment of around 3.2 billion yuan. Upon completion, it will also store 1.14 billion kWh of electricity during low-demand periods and supply 1.04 billion kWh during peak hours, helping reduce the curtailment rate of 7.64 GW of PV capacity in the region by 10.66 percent annually.

The two projects will significantly enhance the efficiency of PV energy utilization, improve the stability and flexibility of Xinjiang’s power grid, and play a crucial role in peak shaving, renewable energy integration and energy security. Additionally, they will contribute to expanding the upstream and downstream industrial chain and accelerating the transition to green and low-carbon development.
