The Dongjin Yellow River Bridge, the largest A-shaped cable-stayed bridge in Dongying’s Yellow River Delta, opened to traffic on January 11.
The bridge was designed by the China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, and built by the China Railway 14th Bureau Group Corporation Limited and Shandong Yellow River Engineering Group Corporation Ltd.
The opening of the bridge has reduced travel time across the Yellow River from more than 30 minutes to just 2 minutes, effectively alleviating traffic pressure and easing pressure on residents.

Located in Lijin county, Dongying city, Shandong Province, the bridge is 1,607 meters long with a main span of 420 meters across the Yellow River. It features six lanes in both directions and is designed for speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour.

To address the challenge of the soft ground in the Yellow River Delta, the main towers of the bridge contain 100 piles, each with a diameter of 2 meters and a length exceeding 100 meters, which are embedded deep into the underground. This setup provides support and stability for the 34,000-ton bridge deck and creates the longest pile foundation over the Yellow River. The deepest pile drill reached 130 meters, equivalent to the height of a 43-story building.

Due to the clearance requirements for the embankments on both sides of the river and flood control considerations, the bridge pioneered an A-shaped tower design without horizontal beams. This design, combined with the massive dumbbell-shaped foundation and the ground beams, forms a stable frame structure. The technology employed has been described as “domestically advanced”.

The bridge is now a striking landmark in the Yellow River Nature Reserve and will play a significant role in easing traffic flow between the Yellow River Delta region and the national expressway network, promoting regional development, advancing ecological protection in the Yellow River Basin and fostering high-quality growth.
