On November 14, 2024, South America’s first smart and green port, Chancay Port in Peru, operated by China COSCO SHIPPING Corporation Limited, officially opened for operations. The port was built by China Communications Construction Company Limited, China Railway Engineering Co., Ltd., and other enterprises.
Located along the central coast of Peru, the Chancay Port features a total quay length of 1,500 meters, a maximum 17.8 meters in depth, and comprises four berths, including two container berths and two multi-purpose berths capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships. Simultaneously, a new direct container shipping route between Shanghai Port and Chancay Port was inaugurated, reducing the transit time by a significant 10 days to approximately 23 days compared to the previous route.
The connection from Chancay to Shanghai not only signifies the flourishing of the Belt and Road Initiative in Peru but also marks the birth of a transcontinental maritime route in the new era, empowering the collective development of economies along the Pacific coast, including China and Peru.
