[SOES' 25 YEARS WITH MACAO] China Southern Power Grid Serves Macao’s High-Quality Growth

Updated: December 23, 2024

Over the past 40 years, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd (CSG), a state-owned power supply enterprise in Guangdong, has supplied a total of 75.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to Macao, significantly contributing to economic growth of the region.

Electricity collaboration between Guangdong and Macao began in 1984 when Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) invested in the construction of a power plant in Shaoguan. Through a 220-kilovolt transmission line from Zhuhai Substation to Macao's North Substation, the two regions have been interconnected, mutually supporting each other to serve the economic and social development of the Pearl River Delta region.

With the surge in electricity demand from Macao, CSG has ramped up efforts in enhancing the power supply capacity to the region with three transmission lines completed and operational. Even in the face of extreme circumstances like typhoons or earthquakes, if one transmission line fails due to a breakdown, the other two stand ready to ensure a stable power supply to Macao.

CSG and CEM have established efficient communication and coordination mechanisms for power interconnection between the two regions, covering network operation, mutual reporting, emergency repairs and dispatch operations. Regular joint meetings of the Interconnection Operation Management Committee and working group sessions are held to promptly address various management and technical issues during interconnection operations, collectively ensuring a secure and stable power supply to Macao.

CSG will continue to enhance power supply to Macao, support the diversified development of Macao's economy and facilitate its integration into national development.
