The substation is the first in Macao’s history to feature total project contracting by a design institute. It will use fully localized electrical equipment and materials. The standardized substation design, developed by the GEDI, is being implemented for the first time in Macao.
Over the years, GEDI has actively integrated itself into the coordinated development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Its contributions to Macao include the overall plan for Macao’s power digital transformation, the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, engineering supervision for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge artificial island facilities, and advisory services for the new dispatch center. These projects demonstrate GEDI’s expertise in supporting Macao’s transition towards digitalization and low-carbon development.
Planning ahead to enhance Macao’s energy security
GEDI’s long-standing relationship with Macao began with the Guangdong-Macao power grid interconnection project.
Following the 2006 release of the Mid- to Long-Term Transmission Planning for Macao by China Southern Power Grid, which confirmed the 220 kV Guangdong-Macao interconnection scheme, GEDI conducted a series of transmission studies to enhance Macao’s energy security and reliability, offering strong intellectual support for its long-term prosperity.
In 2022, the third 220 kV Guangdong-Macao transmission line was put into operation. Starting from 2016, GEDI played a key role in the research and development stages of this project, ensuring its high-quality completion.
An integral part of the project was connecting high-voltage cables to the 220 kV Bei’an Substation in Macao. GEDI provided advisory services for the cable project, ensuring compliance with the Macao Special Administrative Region’s public infrastructure requirements while minimizing the impact on the daily lives of residents.
Delivering innovative green solutions for a smarter, greener Macao
Building a green and smart city has been a cornerstone of Macao’s development philosophy.
“GEDI is committed to advancing low-carbon and decarbonization technologies and contributing to the intelligent transformation of Macao’s urban infrastructure and its innovative electricity consumption experience,” local media reported at a 2021 seminar on electric vehicles and IoT opportunities in Macao.
This year, GEDI completed Macao’s first mobile energy storage project, the Mobile Battery Energy Storage System. The project provides flexible and efficient emergency power for low-voltage systems and large-scale events in Macao, enhancing power supply reliability and safety.
To support Macao’s carbon neutrality goals, GEDI has worked with the Macao Environmental Protection Bureau and the China-UK (Guangdong) CCUS Centre to conduct studies on the development plan and technical roadmap for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) in Macao.
“We aim to leverage GEDI’s high-level research platform and innovative R&D team to provide Macao with more premium solutions for low-carbon and digital transformation,” said Chen Lei, general manager of GEDI’s Hong Kong subsidiary.
