Updated: December 16, 2024

The Guangzhou Company of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC) has successfully launched the medium-sized fire and rescue vessel R-2 for the Macao Customs Service.

Designed by the Wuhan Ship Development and Design Institute and built by CSSC Guijiang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd, the R-2 will play a vital role in addressing fire incidents in Macao’s waters and coastal areas, significantly enhancing emergency response efficiency.

The R-2 is an upgraded version of the Sai Van, a 25-meter rescue vessel for the Macao Marine and Water Bureau. Tailored to the unique conditions of Macao’s waters and operational practices, its design was optimized through comprehensive hydrodynamic calculations and tank testing.

The vessel is equipped with advanced rescue technologies, including thermal imaging cameras for search and rescue, drones, automated lifeboat deployment systems and intelligent remote-controlled life buoys. In addition, a unified information monitoring platform and onboard 4G communication system ensure seamless communication between the vessel, rescue boats, drones, life-saving devices, and other vessels, as well as with shore-based command centers.

Over the years, Guangzhou company has leveraged CSSC’s extensive resources and its geographic proximity to Macao to construct 10 government vessels for the Macao Special Administrative Region government. The launch of the R-2 ahead of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland underscores its role in safeguarding the region’s safety and stability, while also contributing to economic prosperity.
