Chinese Enterprises Support Development in the UAE

Updated: December 05, 2024

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), a vital strategic partner for China, has witnessed robust collaboration with Chinese enterprises in recent years. From infrastructure projects like railways and photovoltaic power plants to seawater desalination facilities and hospitals, Chinese companies are actively contributing to the UAE's development.

Supporting UAE’s infrastructure construction

The Etihad railway, the first railway in the UAE, runs through all seven emirates and connects the country with the world. The Package A for Stage 2 of the railway, jointly constructed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (Middle East) and international partners, has passed initial performance checks.

Spanning over 140 kilometers, this section of the railway connects key industrial and logistic hubs in the UAE and is part of a broader Gulf railway network. Praised for its quality and timely delivery, the project has garnered multiple safety and performance awards, including the International Safety Awards in 2021 and 2022 from the British Safety Council and the 2022 Global Project Excellence Award from the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Etihad rail commenced freight services in 2022, with an annual capacity of 60 million tons. Passenger services are expected to begin by 2030, initially accommodating 6 million passengers annually.

Dedicated to environmental protection

The Hassyan Seawater Desalination Project, built by SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of the Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), is located near the Jebel Ali Wetland Sanctuary.

During its construction, the project team integrated green construction practices to minimize environmental impacts. The initiative, which includes marine flora conservation and protection of nesting sea turtles, reflects the company's dedication to sustainable development. Collaborative activities with local organizations further enhance public awareness of marine ecosystem preservation, strengthening the project’s environmental legacy.

Fostering cultural exchange

Youth exchange programs organized by Chinese institutions have deepened mutual understanding between the two countries. Participants have marveled at China's technological innovations, green development achievements, and shared cultural heritage. These experiences are fostering greater connectivity among young leaders and enhancing people-to-people ties, contributing to the enduring China-UAE relationship.

The Chinese Chamber of Commerce in the UAE recently released its first Corporate Social Responsibility Report on Chinese Enterprises in the UAE, highlighting numerous cases of contributions to local economic development, environmental protection and community engagement.

“Marking 40 years of diplomatic relations, the UAE-China partnership is at its strongest, bolstered by Chinese enterprises’ active role in the UAE's sustainable development,” said Zhang Yiming, Chinese ambassador to the UAE.

“Their endeavors serve as a model for deepened trust and cooperation, paving the way for shared prosperity and sustainable growth in the region.”
