BiH’s First Chinese-Invested Wind Power Project Connects to Grid

Updated: October 28, 2024

The Ivovik wind power project, Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)’s first renewable energy project to receive investment from Chinese companies, has been successfully connected to the grid.

Jointly funded and constructed by Power Construction Corporation of China and China General Technology (Group) Holding Co., Ltd., the project has been highlighted as one of the achievements of the Summit of China and Central and Eastern European Countries in 2021.

Since its official launch in July 2022, the project team has tackled communication and technical challenges to adapt the design and fully convert it to local standards. Despite challenges in compatibility with local standards, the project saw the first large-scale application of China-made electrical equipment in renewable energy projects in the Balkan region, achieving a localization rate of over 90 percent.

Operating under tight schedules, the team completed all on-site engineering within 16 months, while ensuring “zero accidents” in safety and quality and “zero complaints” for environmental impact. The team further embraced localization by obtaining more than 100 permits and approvals, successfully passing technical inspections from BiH’s power grid operator and relevant government authorities.

With a total installed capacity of 84 megawatts, the wind farm comprises 20 Chinese-made turbines, a 110 kV booster station, four 35 kV collector lines, and a 1.65-kilometer 110 kV transmission line connected to the grid.

It is expected to generate 259 million kWh of electricity annually, contributing to BiH’s green energy transition.
