Chinese Enterprises Supports Indonesia’s Energy Transition

Updated: October 16, 2024

Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has awarded the prestigious Subroto Award for Power Safety in the Thermal Power Plants Category (Power Plants >200 MW) to CHN Energy Investment Group’s PT. SHENHUA GUOHUA PEMBANGKITAN JAWA BALI (SGPJB).

The Subroto Award is the highest honor conferred by Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

SGPJB, located in the western part of Java Island, is a joint venture between China Shenhua Energy Company Limited and Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company. It boasts the largest single-unit capacity and the most advanced coal-fired power unit built overseas by a Chinese company.

SGPJB is committed to providing Indonesia with safe and sustainable energy and has proactively cultivated local talent in the power sector, supporting the country’s green economy, and ensuring that the Belt and Road Initiative benefits local communities.

Over the years, SGPJB has maintained a zero-accident safety record. Since its commissioning, it has generated a total of 55.59 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, ensuring the stable supply of energy to Indonesia and supporting the country’s socio-economic development. It continues to deliver safe, efficient and clean energy to the grid, leading in power generation share, reliability and environmental performance within Java’s power grid.

SGPJB’s operations have driven the development of upstream industries such as coal and transportation while supporting downstream industries like manufacturing and services. During the construction phase, the project provided direct employment to more than 5,000 local workers. In the operational phase, it has offered 850 jobs to Indonesian workers, while indirectly creating more than 2,000 other jobs, significantly contributing to employment locally.

The company continues to deepen strategic collaboration with domestic and international partners, increasing R&D investment in clean energy, smart grids and energy storage to remain competitive in the global energy market. The company is also transitioning from a traditional single power generation model to a “coal power plus” approach, exploring integrated energy development.

SGPJB participates in public welfare initiatives and integrates into local community development, fostering strong friendships between Chinese and Indonesian people. The company has invested over 2 million yuan ($281,000) in community assistance programs, organizing more than 20 community aid missions and conducting over 100 visits to local communities.

In terms of environmental protection, as the first million-kilowatt ultra-supercritical coal unit exported by China and Indonesia’s first of its kind, SGPJB has been committed to clean and efficient coal utilization, improving power generation efficiency, and reducing carbon emissions. The company has implemented zero wastewater discharge management, hazardous waste treatment, and ecological restoration projects, employing advanced technologies to provide reliable and clean energy.

The company has also spearheaded ecological protection projects, including mangrove and wildlife preservation, significantly improving the health of local ecosystems. Over recent years, the area’s mangrove forests have expanded, and the population of wildlife has increased, with more rare species finding a home, demonstrating the long-term success of SGPJB’s environmental efforts.

As one of the Chinese enterprises “going global”, SGPJB has become a cornerstone for the CHN Energy’s integrated development in Southeast Asia’s energy market. The company remains committed to fostering shared prosperity, openness, innovation, and cultural exchange in Indonesia.
