Power Supply From Mainland to Macao Surpasses a Million Kilowatts for the First Time

Updated: July 09, 2024

At 12:43 pm on July 1, according to China Southern Power Grid (CSG), the power supply load from the mainland to Macao exceeded one million kilowatts for the first time, reaching nearly 1.04 million kilowatts.

The load marks a 4.85 percent increase from the previous peak of 989,000 kilowatts, recorded in 2023. In total, in the 40 years since the launch of the Guangdong-Macao power grid, the mainland has supplied over 73 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity to the Special Administrative Region (SAR).

This year, Macao's economy has experienced a robust recovery, and with the rising summer temperatures, the electricity load has increased significantly. To effectively meet the continuously growing power demand, the CSG’s Guangdong Power Grid has been optimizing the supply network structure. It has implemented cable upgrades for the connecting lines between core substations along various routes, continuously enhancing the Chinese mainland's power supply capacity to Macao and improving disaster prevention and resilience capabilities.

Over four decades of collaborative development, the power interconnection channels between Guangdong and Macao have evolved into a network structure comprising three main routes—north, central and south – with eight primary 220-kilovolt supply lines and four 110-kilovolt backup lines. CSG's maximum transmission capacity to Macao has increased to 1.7 million kilowatts, providing robust energy support for the economic development of the SAR and the deepening of Guangdong-Macao cooperation in the interests of prosperity and stability.

Last year, annual power supply from the mainland to Macao reached 5.33 billion kilowatt-hours, a year-on-year increase of 9.31 percent, accounting for 90 percent of Macao's total electricity consumption.
