The Astana Light Rail Transit in Kazakhstan is the first urban light rail line in Central Asia, and the first rail transit project in the region built entirely with Chinese standards and Chinese equipment.
The total length of the project is about 22.4 kilometers, of which an 18.34-kilometer section, with 14 stations, 15 sections and one vehicle depot, is being built by China Construction Sixth Engineering Bureau Corp., Ltd, a subsidiary of China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC).
The project connects key landmarks and functional areas such as the International Airport, Nazarbayev University, the International Exhibition Center Expo Astana, the Astana Grand Mosque, and Abu Dhabi Plaza. It is a representative project for the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Once completed and operational, the commuting time at both ends of the light rail line can be shortened by nearly half. It will become the most technologically representative urban rail transit project in Kazakhstan and the entire Central Asia region.
