CECEP Boosts Construction of Ethiopia's Largest Sewage Treatment Project

Updated: May 20, 2024

CECEP Guozhen Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group (CECEP), recently signed a contract with the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority, and the Water Supply and Sanitation Development and Rehabilitation Project Office for the Addis Ababa Eastern Catchment Wastewater Treatment Plant (Design-Build-Operate) project. This project is Ethiopia's largest sewage treatment project funded by a World Bank loan.

The project involves the construction of two sewage treatment plants located in the Kitime and Kotebe districts of Addis Ababa, with capacities of 52,000 cubic meters per day and 54,000 cubic meters per day, respectively.

The sewage treatment will utilize the modified CAS-A2O activated sludge process, while sludge treatment will involve anaerobic digestion, producing biogas for cogeneration. Waste gases will be treated using biological deodorization technology. The overall design and construction period is 36 months, including a 9-month design phase and a 15-year operation period.

CECEP Guozhen will be responsible for the design, equipment supply, installation guidance, and commissioning of the project. Upon completion, the sewage treatment plants will serve most areas of Bole and Yeka, benefiting 885,000 residents in eastern Addis Ababa, improving local water conditions and supporting sustainable development in BRI countries.
