In Weihai city, Shandong province, a fishing boat is slowly entering the harbor. Its "face" (identification feature composed of the shape, color, and markings of the hull) was immediately captured by the "Fishery Verification and Recording" system.
This high-tech system, developed by China United Network Communications Group Co., Ltd. (China Unicom), quickly confirmed the identity of the vessel, completing the verification within five minutes, significantly improving efficiency and accuracy.
Weihai city has a coastline of 968 kilometers and jurisdiction over an area of 11,323 square kilometers. A major traditional marine fishing city, it boasts nearly ten thousand fishing vessels of various types.
China Unicom Digital Technology Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China Unicom, developed the vessel recognition technology and the "Fishery Verification and Recording" system, together with the CPC Weihai Municipal Committee, the Weihai Municipal Government, and the Weihai Municipal Marine Development Bureau.
Since the launch of the system 16 months ago, the average recognition accuracy of the ships has reached over 86 percent. It has completed 8,580 AI warnings, collected data of more than 3,100 fishing vessels, and finished over 19,153 machine learning iterations, improving the management level of intelligent fishing ports and realizing the transformation of fishing vessels from "extensive management" to "refined management".
According to on-site measurements by the Weihai Municipal Marine Development Bureau, the average time for each vessel verification has been shortened to five minutes from 40 minutes.
