Construction of Hungary-Serbia Railway Makes Fresh Progress

Updated: May 08, 2024

Track laying for a 108-kilometer-long section of the Hungary-Serbia Railway between Novi Sad and Subotica was recently completed in the Serbian city of Backa Topola.

China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and China Railway 11th Bureau Group Corporation Limited, subsidiaries of China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, undertook the work.

The Hungary-Serbia Railway is a flagship cooperation project between China and Central and Eastern European countries.

After the Serbian section of the Hungary-Serbia Railway is completed and put into operation, the travel time from Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, to the border city of Subotica will be shortened from 8 to 3 hours. It will greatly improve the infrastructure and local traffic conditions of Serbia.

It will also help deepen mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries and build an international trade channel between China and Europe.

Currently, overall construction of the Novi Sad-Subotica section is 80 percent complete.

The track has successfully passed the dynamic test, which showed that trains running on a stretch between Novi Sad and Subotica can achieve a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour.
