China's First Tuna Smart Fishing Forecast System Launches

Updated: April 26, 2024

The Haiying AI system, jointly developed by CNFC Overseas Fisheries Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China National Agricultural Development Group Co., Ltd., and Shanghai Ocean University, was recently officially launched, marking a significant breakthrough in China's tuna smart fishing forecast system.

Tuna is a high-value fishery species, and is of great significance to the global marine economy and ensuring food security. In order to improve our understanding of the fish and our efficiency in harvesting it, CNFC Overseas Fisheries Co., Ltd., together with Shanghai Ocean University, developed China's first tuna smart fishing forecast system with an international advanced level.

"The Haiying AI system can provide real-time information on more than 20 marine habitat elements such as atmospheric pressure, wind fields, sea waves, sea temperatures, salinity, and sea surface heights. The team combined knowledge of tuna biology, ecology, and fishery grounds, and used big data mining and deep learning technologies to achieve prediction of tuna fishing grounds and medium and long-term resource estimates, providing support for the scientific production and management of tuna fisheries," said the person in charge of the College of Marine Living Resource Sciences and Management, Shanghai Ocean University.

The system can also monitor the positions of operating fishing vessels, and issue boundary crossing and collision avoidance warnings for fishing vessels. It automatically sends emails for transit reporting based on vessel positions and navigation routes to avoid unnecessary disputes.

Currently, the Haiying AI system has been promoted to all tuna fishing vessels of CNFC Overseas Fisheries Co., Ltd., achieving significant results. In 2023, the system was tested in the company's Atlantic fleet, resulting in a 13.8 percent increase in catch per vessel. As the total tuna catch is quota-limited, the widespread application of the Haiying AI system in production operations greatly improves fishing efficiency.

CNFC Overseas Fisheries Co., Ltd., has strengthened scientific and technological cooperation with Shanghai Ocean University and has achieved a series of cooperative results in recent years in areas such as large drum smart fishing machines, fishing forecasting, fishery resource exploration and capture, in national major science and technology projects. The company will further integrate resource advantages, deepen industry-university-research cooperation to promote fishery technological innovation and achievement transformation, and contribute to the sustainable development of ocean fisheries.
