Updated: April 25, 2024

With the installation of the 69th pipe joint in the left zone of the upper pile area, China Railway Tunnel Group Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Group Limited, successfully completed the building of a three-lane, cross-section and pipe-jacking tunnel project under an overpass bridge of the Dongguan-Foshan Expressway in Guangzhou city of South China's Guangdong province on April 17.

The rapid underground renovation project of Fenghuang Street stretches between Huangge South Road and an overpass bridge of the Dongguan-Foshan Expressway for a length of 151.5 meters. At depths of around 4.07 meters and 4.86 meters, its pipe-jacking section is about 14.8 meters long and 9.43 meters wide, the largest rectangular pipe-jacking section in southern China. The distance between the upper pipe's edge and the bridge pillars of the Dongguan-Foshan Expressway is only two meters, which made the construction process tremendously difficult and highly risky.

To ensure the smooth completion of the pipe-jacking tunnel project, the construction team took into account such factors as the large size of the section, shallow soil, and short distance between the pipe's edge and bridge pillars in the finalization of excavation parameters, strengthened its exchanges with the design and property ownership departments, engaged in several rounds of discussions with experts about bridge protection plans, and adopted automatic monitoring facilities for bridge conditions.
