Designed and developed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, the ship is the first WHALE series ship this year, and made the company the largest asphalt ship supplier in the world with a delivery of 37 such ships.

With a total length of 179.9 meters, a width of 30.6 meters, and a depth of 16.8 meters, ASPHALT SONATA is registered in the Bureau Veritas. It is capable of carrying 37,000 tons of asphalt in a single voyage.

The ship is equipped with WinGD engines and a low-pressure selective catalytic reduction system, ensuring that the treated exhaust gas meets the Tier III emission requirements of the International Maritime Organization.

The ship also complies with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea.

To guarantee safety of the asphalt, the cargo tank system of the ship is equipped with two thermal oil boilers to heat the asphalt.

The ship also has an advanced liquid cargo system and a transfer system simple and easy to use, which enhances safety while reducing equipment and maintenance costs.

Long-distance shipment of asphalt across continents was rare in old days. With the increasing demand for asphalt in infrastructure construction in the Asia-Pacific region, the asphalt transportation market welcomes vigorous development.

Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute designed and developed the first 5,900-ton asphalt ship in 2005, and then the company delivered asphalt ships with capacities of 3,500 tons, 7,500 tons, 13,000 tons, 17,000 tons, and 37,000 tons.

The 37,000-ton asphalt ship is the world's largest of its kind with independent cargo tank and was first delivered and put into operation in 2015. It has achieved favorable economic benefits.
