CHN Energy Powers Near-Zero-Carbon Demonstration Zone in Boao With Green Energy

Updated: March 26, 2024

The renewable energy utilization, green traffic and green building sections of Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2024 have been well prepared.

The BFA Annual Conference 2024 is held from March 26 to 29 in Boao. As the permanent site for the event, Dongyu Island is expected to be a window to show the world China’s concept, technology and practices of green and low-carbon development.

Yan Liang, head of the photovoltaic power station of CHN Energy Investment Group (CHN Energy)’s Hainan subsidiary, said that the Boao Near-Zero-Carbon Demonstration Zone includes 18 projects categorized in eight sections.

CHN Energy is one of the four contractors and is responsible for construction of the integral distribution photovoltaic system, the agricultural-solar organic fruit and vegetable supply base, the green traffic site on Dongyu Island, the green shuttle station outside the island, and the supporting traffic facilities, as well as the photovoltaic-energy storage-direct current-flexibility (PEDF) system.

In order to guarantee safe operation during the event, CHN Energy has improved monitoring and inspection of the power generation and transmission equipment while also preparing emergency supplies.

Yan explained that diversified green power equipment will be seen on the island, such as smart lamp posts integrating functions of lighting, video surveillance, environment monitoring and information releasing, and charging piles installed at the smart parking lot.

The agricultural-solar complementation and distribution photovoltaic power generation projects built by CHN Energy’s Hainan subsidiary on Dongyu Island have installed capacities of 20 megawatts and 3.2 MW respectively.

The first project applies the smart agricultural technology to growing of high value-added crops which are suitable for the natural greenhouse climate in Hainan. It is expected to set a model for future agricultural-solar complementation projects in the region.

The second project applies various new-types of photovoltaic components like fabricated BIPV, intending to build a facility with good integration of a photovoltaic power system and its building’s structural components.

Located in the Boao Near-Zero-Carbon Demonstration Zone, the BAF News Center is where domestic and foreign journalists work together. It is a net-zero-carbon building in the demonstration zone with a self-sufficient energy supply.

Based on the energy router, the CHN Energy’s Hainan subsidiary built a PEDF system covering micro-wind power generation, rooftop photovoltaic power generation, all-vanadium flow energy storage, and flexible loads. It adopts an advanced alternating current (AC) and DC mutual aid mode to optimize and upgrade the PEDF technology.

It’s worth noting that during the construction, CHN Energy’s subsidiary in Hainan applied an environmentally-friendly, highly-secure, and long-life all-vanadium flow long-duration energy storage system, which is a first in the field and is expected to promote exploration of new scenarios for long-duration energy storage in low-carbon buildings.

Next, CHN Energy's Hainan subsidiary will continue to play a leading role in building Hainan into a clean energy island and a free trade port with Chinese characteristics, and in developing more net-zero-carbon demonstration zones in the region.
