CHD Launches 200,000-KW New Energy-Based Hydrogen Production Project

Updated: March 26, 2024

China’s largest green hydrogen transportation system has started operation thanks to the 200,000-kW new energy-based hydrogen production demonstration project developed by China Huadian Corporation Ltd. (CHD) in Baotou, North China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The project is one of the country’s first large-scale hydrogen production demonstration projects based on renewable energy and one of the region’s first wind-solar energy hydrogen production projects.

The project will include 120,000 kilowatts of wind power installed capacity and 80,000 kW of photovoltaic power installed capacity. It will also have an electrochemical energy storage capacity of 20,000 kilowatt-hours and a water-electrolytic hydrogen production capacity of 12,000 Nm3/h, realizing 100 percent green power-based hydrogen production.

With a designed annual power and hydrogen output of 552 million kWh and 7,800 metric tons, respectively, the project is expected to reduce emissions of approximately 430,000 tons of carbon dioxide, 60 tons of sulfur dioxide, and 84 tons of oxynitride annually.

The annual green hydrogen output can meet demand of about 1,000 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks, and is expected to promote expansion of the green hydrogen development.

It’s worth noting that the hydrogen production equipment is facilitated with large-capacity alkaline electrolyzers and Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) hydrogen production equipment.

Once operational, the project will become a demonstration for building a net zero carbon, low-cost, safe and reliable green hydrogen supply system in China.
