The world’s first CATS Router made its debut at the Mobile World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, Spain, on Feb 26 local time.
Developed by China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. (China Mobile), the router has functions of computing adaptivity perception, notice and joint route, which are breakthroughs in traditional internet route modes and build a foundation for deep and integrated development of computing adaptive capacity to the internet.
The CATS Router is intended to provide computing adaptivity into the internet from a root level.
Introducing computing adaptivity into networks has been a matter of high concern around the world. In March 2023, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) established a CATS task group, appointing a China Mobile expert as the head. The group aims to make international standards of the CATS scenarios, demands and framework, which will mark that a consensus has been reached in integrating computing adaptive capacity into internet development.
The recently-released CATS Router was developed based on the current operating router platforms of NetEngine and ZXR10 and can flexibly support computing adaptivity information extension, adaptive computing notification and dynamic joint route functions.
Testing showed that under the edge-computing scenario, the CATS Router can reduce time delay of end-to-end high-concurrency operation by 15 percent on average, and improve computing network capacity by 30 percent, which can support industries concerned with time delay and computing capacity like artificial reality and virtual reality, the internet of vehicles and artificial intelligence inference.
China Mobile will now launch large-scale testing for the first CATS Routers, verifying their performance for future commercial operation.
