China Completes Current Network Test of World’s Largest 5G RedCap

Updated: February 29, 2024

China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. (CMCC) together with over 10 partners have completed current network testing of the world’s largest-scale 5G RedCap, verifying that the first 5G RedCap-based chips and terminals are ready for commercial use.

At present, more than 100,000 China Mobile’s base stations are available for 5G RedCap and cover 52 cities in China.

The recently-completed 5G RedCap current network testing covered five technological innovation cities, namely Ningbo of East China’s Zhejiang Province, Guangzhou of South China’s Guangdong Province, Shanghai Municipality, Yueyang of Central China’s Hunan Province and Shiyan of Central China’s Hubei Province.

It had a commercial industrial chain including chips, modules and the network and various kinds of scenarios of a RedCap terminal network.

The testing was done at an experimental laboratory and in the field. The basic functions and augmentation functions of the network, the performance and the network compatibility of the first chips, the integration with 5G technology of the RedCap and the network slicing, were verified throughout.

Ten suppliers for the network, chips and modules also participated in the testing, which effectively supported development of the chips and modules.

The testing showed that the terminal device with the 2.6GHz-internet has an upload and download speed of 20Mbps and 145Mbps, with an average network rate of 12Mbps and 71Mbps, respectively.

When the terminal devices run with the 700MHz-internet, the upload and download speeds reach 112Mbps and 210Mbps, which has an average network rate of 71Mbps and 90Mbps, respectively.

The network-side is available for large-capacity scenarios, wearable devices and the electrical industry.
