The outer dome of Linglong One, the world’s first multi-purpose small modular reactor (SMR) demonstration project, was hoisted at Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant in South China's Hainan Province on Feb 6.
It marked the completion of the main body of the reactor, and laid a foundation for capping of the reactor.
The Linglong One reactor is invested and operated by China National Nuclear Corporation.
According to the company, the reactor was designed not only for power generation, but also for heat supply in various forms.
As a source of high security distributed clean energy, the Linglong One reactor can act as a conventional coal-fired thermal power plant located near cities and in industrial parks.
Once operational, the project is expected to generate 1 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually, and eliminate 880,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. The output can meet the power demands of 526,000 households for a year in Hainan.
It will contribute to realization of China’s dual carbon goals of peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. It is of great significance in continuous promotion of safe development and independent innovation of nuclear power. Furthermore, it will add green energy to the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port and help build the region into an ecological civilization demonstration zone.
