Located in the mountainous area of Cusco Province in South Peru, the tunnel is 1,987.5 meters long and has a designed speed of 40 kilometers per hour.
The deepest section of the tunnel is about 328 meters underground and the largest fracture surface covers 95 square meters, both top in two-lane highway tunnels in Peru.
It is a key section of the highway leading to Machu Picchu, the site of ancient Inca ruins.
China-developed machines were adopted during construction, which had outstanding performance in tunnel digging.
Once operational, the highway tunnel is expected to improve the highway network in Cusco, which is of great significance in promoting economic development in the region and accelerating highway traffic construction in Peru.
