China's 1st High-Altitude Wind Power Project Starts Operation

Updated: January 17, 2024

The Jixi new technology high-altitude wind power generation demonstration project in East China's Anhui Province started operation on Jan 7, 2024. It is the country's first megawatt-level high-altitude power project.

Built by China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited (Energy China), the project has a total installed capacity of 2×2.4 megawatts. As an engineering application of China's high-altitude wind power generation technology, it is of great significance in promoting that technology and its industrialization in China.

High-altitude wind power is a rich and widely-scattered renewable clean energy source. Compared to lower elevation onshore wind power, it has large power density and stable wind direction, which has huge potential for development and utilization.

Energy China has concentrated on development of a new systematic solution to core technology of high-altitude wind power generation. It is now pushing forward construction sites for kilometer-level high-altitude wind power generation and has obtained approval of the necessary major key research and development technologies and equipment.

Next, the company plans to continue its research and testing in high-altitude wind power generation technology to support the industry across the country.
