China Launches World's First 1.2T Ultra-High-Speed Next-Generation Internet Backbone

Updated: November 17, 2023

The ultra-high-speed next-generation internet backbone, spanning over 3,000 kilometers and connecting Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou, was launched at Tsinghua University on Nov 13.

According to the Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI) project leader, this is the world's first-known ultra-high-speed next-generation Internet backbone and has a bandwidth of 1,200G bits per second (1.2T).

Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI) is an important component of the national major science and technology infrastructure project of the China Environment for Network Innovation-Future Network Test Infrastructure Platform. The FITI backbone is a major technological achievement of FITI, jointly developed by Tsinghua University, China Mobile Limited, Huawei, and the CERNET Corporation. Since its trial operation began on July 31, the FITI backbone has been running stably and reliably, passing various tests and meeting design specifications.

The FITI backbone is based on China’s own key technologies in next-generation Internet, including the core router 1.2T ultra-high-speed IPv6 interface and 3x400G ultra-high-speed multi-path aggregation. With a total length of over 3,000 kilometers, the backbone is achieved using domestically made system software and hardware, placing its overall technological level at the global forefront.

While the 400G backbone technology is just beginning to be commercially utilized around the world, the completion of the 1.2T ultra-high-speed next-generation Internet backbone signifies China's backbone technology having surpassed the T-bit level threshold.

FITI, built by 40 universities including Tsinghua University, is based on IPv6 technology. The core nodes of its high-performance backbone network are distributed in 40 universities in 35 cities of 31 provincial-level regions across the country.

With over 30,000 kilometers of optical fiber communication networks, FITI can provide various technical experimental services for future Internet to all types of users, supporting FITI in becoming an extensive open Internet test environment. In April 2021, the high-performance backbone network of FITI started operation, achieving interconnection with IPv4/IPv6 test facilities at both home and abroad.
