As a project utilizing the Concessional Loan and Preferential Export Buyer's Credit (Two Concessional Facilities) provided by the Export-Import Bank of China, the Zungeru hydropower plant project was jointly constructed by CNEEC and SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited under Power Construction Corporation of China. It started in 2013 and was handed over in 2023, with a total contract value of US$1.29 billion.
The Zungeru hydropower plant was the largest hydropower station under construction in Nigeria, and also the largest hydropower project contracted by two Chinese companies in Nigeria. It serves multiple functions, including power generation, flood control, irrigation, breeding, and shipping, with an installed capacity of 700 megawatts.
Since the project started construction in 2013, it has encountered many challenges.
The project team overcame various difficulties and actively promoted project design, procurement, and construction. This has led to the smooth operation of the power station's equipment system, excellent performance status, and the successful completion of all testing requirements, from the stand-alone grid connection tests to the integrated grid connection tests and a 700-megawatt full-load performance assessment.
The project has fully met and exceeded the contract requirements in terms of construction period, performance and quality.
