The Padma Bridge watercourse renovation project in Bangladesh, which was undertaken by PowerChina Harbour Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China, was recently completed.

The project, which is located about 50 kilometers south of the Bangladeshi capital city Dhaka, is the world's largest watercourse renovation project and an integral part of the Padma Bridge, the largest infrastructure project in Bangladesh's history.

The watercourse renovation project mainly consists of river dredging and river bank protection in the upper and lower reaches of the Padma Bridge. The dredging capacity of the project is nearly 100 million cubic meters, equivalent to the size of 5.36 West Lakes in Hangzhou, capital city of East China's Zhejiang Province. The volume of stones excavated from the Padma River exceeds three million tons, which can fill 50,000 standard containers.

Additionally, the river bank protection section of the watercourse renovation project is about 13 kilometers long.

The watercourse renovation project has set up numerous records and filled international gaps in the high-precision work of large-scale dredgers.

With an annual total runoff of 1.3 trillion cubic meters, the Padma River is widely known as one of the most dangerous and unpredictable rivers in the world. Its water carries lots of sand and it has been plagued with a heavy sand problem.

The completion of the watercourse renovation project will fundamentally guarantee the safety of the Padma Bridge and further boost the economic development of Bangladesh as well as regional connectivity and integration.
