A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the Dabar Hydropower Plant in Trebinje, a city of Republika Srpska (RS) of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), on June 23.
The hydropower plant will be built by China Gezhouba Group Three Gorges Construction Engineering Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Group Co., Ltd. With an installed capacity of 159.15 MW and a total investment of 244 million euros ($266.8 million), it is the largest hydropower project undertaken by Chinese enterprises in Central and Eastern Europe.
Dabar Hydropower Plant is located in the mountainous city of Trebinje and is about 200 kilometers away from Sarajevo, capital of BiH. It is an important project for improving people’s wellbeing and of great significance for BiH, especially RS, demonstrating the vitality of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and representing a higher level for the economic and green partnership between the two countries.
The hydropower plant will fundamentally ease electricity shortage in BiH, promote local economic and social development, and enhance the country's energy security as well as green transformation.
