China Makes New Progress in Heavy-Duty Gas Turbine

Updated: June 13, 2023

The Taihang 110 heavy-duty gas turbine developed by Aero Engine Corporation of China passed product verification on June 4 in Shenzhen, South China's Guangdong Province.

It is China's first 110-megawatt heavy-duty gas turbine with proprietary intellectual property rights.

As a core equipment for highly-efficient energy conversion, clean energy utilization and multiple fields application, the heavy-duty gas turbine has been highlighted by many countries.

Development of the equipment is expected to support realization of China's "dual carbon" goals of peaking carbon dioxide by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2060 and will contribute to guaranteeing national energy security and promoting high-quality development.

The Taihang 110 has a designed power of 110 MW and has outstanding performance in fast launch, comprehensive heat efficiency and easy maintenance.

As it can be powered by various kinds of fuels like oil, natural gas and middle-and low-calorific value gas, the turbine can be used in a wide range of fields such as combined heat and power generation, natural gas peak-shaving plant and combined cycle power generation.

What's more, the turbine can play a supporting role in various kinds of energy coupling power supply based on wind, solar and hydro power.

Compared with a thermal generator unit with the same power, the newly-developed gas turbine is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1 million metric tons annually while generating more than 150,000 kilowatt-hours of power per hour, meeting daily power demands of 15,000 households.

Development of the Taihang 110 was launched as one of the first gas turbine innovation development demonstration projects by the National Energy Administration in 2019.

An improved prototype of the equipment rolled off the production line in 2020 and the demonstration operation of the equipment at the power plant started in 2022.

So far, the equipment has cumulatively operated for over 14,000 hours.
