China's mega water diversion project, which channels water from South to North, had diverted more than 62 billion cubic meters of water as of May 14, according to China South-to-North Water Diversion Corporation Limited.
The South-to-North Water Diversion Project has brought significant economic, social and ecological benefits.
The first phase of the project was put into operation in December 2014. Since then, the annual water transfer volume has continued to increase and up till now has benefited more than 150 million people in more than 280 counties and urban areas in 42 large and medium-sized cities in affected areas.
At present, water diverted from the South accounts for 75 percent of the water supply in Beijing, the capital of China, and 99 percent of that in North China's Tianjin Municipality.
China South-to-North Water Diversion Corporation Limited has been in full swing in promoting further planning and construction of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project and accelerating the building of the country's water network.
According to the company, the first follow-up project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project that will divert water from the Three Gorges Reservoir to the Hanjiang River is now making smooth progress.
